Where it came from
Drain Power was originally released in the 1993 Alpha set for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Richard Garfield to be a high-risk, high-reward blue instant that reflected the game's early focus on asymmetrical mana mechanics. The card was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, whose distinct, flowing art style became a cornerstone of the game's visual identity during its formative years.
The 30th Anniversary Edition version, released in 2022, serves as a premium, non-tournament-legal retrospective of the game's history. It reproduces the original art and frame design to celebrate the franchise's enduring legacy, though it is intended strictly for display and collection purposes rather than competitive play.
