Where it came from
The Eldrazi Spawn token was released as part of the 2016 Planechase Anthology, a compilation set designed to revisit the chaos-driven, planar-hopping mechanics of the original Planechase series. These tokens were specifically printed to support cards like Nest Invader or Skittering Invasion that generate 0/1 colorless creature tokens, which players could sacrifice to generate mana. This specific printing features updated card frames and artwork consistent with the visual standards of modern Magic: The Gathering supplementary products.
The visual design of these tokens reflects the unsettling, alien aesthetic of the Eldrazi, a cosmic threat within the game's lore characterized by distorted geometry and muted, desaturated color palettes. The artwork leans into the 'Cthulhu-meets-sci-fi' horror style established by the Wizards of the Coast art department during the development of the Rise of the Eldrazi expansion, prioritizing a sense of wrongness and otherworldliness to differentiate these creatures from the game's more traditional fantasy archetypes.
