Where it came from
The Emeritus of Woe variant of Demonic Tutor was released as part of the 'Secrets of Strixhaven' series, a specialized set of cards sold through the Wizards of the Coast Secret Lair drop series in 2021. The card was designed to celebrate the academic aesthetic of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion, utilizing a unique 'mystical archive' frame style that highlights the high-fantasy, scholarly tone of the set.
The artwork for this specific piece was crafted by Magali Villeneuve, an acclaimed illustrator in the trading card space known for her evocative character portraits. Her design for the card focuses on the dark, intellectual allure of the university's more forbidden corners, moving away from traditional demonic imagery to emphasize a sense of ancient, weary power. Upon its release, the card was widely received by players and collectors as a premium interpretation of a classic, powerful spell.
