Where it came from
Emeritus of Truce // Swords to Plowshares is a double-faced card released in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Secrets of Strixhaven. The set focuses on the Strixhaven University of Magic, with this specific card reflecting the institution's emphasis on both academic inquiry and the transformation of conflict into peaceful resolution. It was designed to provide players with a versatile tool that balances board state management with long-term utility.
The card features artwork that aligns with the aesthetic identity of the Silverquill and Lorehold colleges within the Strixhaven lore. By combining the iconic Swords to Plowshares effect—a staple of white-aligned control strategies since the game's inception—with the mechanical framework of the Strixhaven set, the designers sought to modernize a classic effect while grounding it in the narrative of a magical academy striving for equilibrium.
