Where it came from
Released in 2021 as part of the 'Secrets of Strixhaven' drop within the Secret Lair series, this card reimagines the iconic Demonic Tutor. The series was designed to showcase the magical university of Strixhaven through the lens of a mysterious, archive-focused aesthetic, blending the academic setting of the institution with the dark, forbidden knowledge typical of its black-aligned magic.
The artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, who employed a distinct, stained-glass inspired style to depict the Emeritus of Woe. Villeneuve aimed to convey a sense of ancient, heavy authority, fitting for a tutor that searches the library of the multiverse. The design was well-received by players for its departure from standard card frames, leaning into the premium, boutique presentation that defines the Secret Lair line.
