Where it came from
Esper Sentinel was originally introduced as a rare card in the Modern Horizons 2 expansion, released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021. Designed to bridge the gap between high-powered competitive play and classic creature utility, it was created by the design team to offer white-aligned decks a robust method of card advantage, a mechanic historically difficult for that color to access. The card’s design echoes the aesthetic of the Esper shard from the Alara plane, emphasizing artifact-driven synergy and tactical taxation.
This specific version of the card appeared as part of 'The List,' a curated collection of reprints included within Set Boosters to add variety and value for players opening packs. By pulling from the card's original Modern Horizons 2 release, 'The List' provided an opportunity for the card to circulate in a wider variety of limited environments. Its inclusion solidified its status as a staple for formats like Commander and Legacy, where its ability to tax opponents remains a highly regarded defensive and iterative utility.
