Where it came from
Esper Sentinel was introduced in the 2021 set Modern Horizons 2, a product designed specifically to inject powerful new cards into the Modern format of Magic: The Gathering. Created by Wizards of the Coast, the card was intended to provide white decks with a much-needed tool for card advantage, echoing the mechanical identity of artifacts from the Alara plane while fitting the high-powered environment of contemporary play.
The illustration for this specific promotional version was crafted by Victor Adame Minguez, who sought to capture the vigilant and stoic essence of the construct. The artwork leans into the sleek, high-magic aesthetic characteristic of the Esper shard, and the card was met with immediate acclaim from competitive players who recognized it as a format-defining staple for its efficiency and tax-based defensive utility.
