Where it came from
Esper Sentinel was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 set for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to function as a white-aligned utility creature, providing the color with card draw mechanics that were traditionally rare for its archetype. Its thematic roots are tied to the shard of Esper, a plane in the multiverse defined by its infusion of magical metal called etherium, which explains the construct's sleek, artificial appearance.
The artwork was illustrated by Eric Deschamps, who captured the sentinel as a vigilant, armored guardian standing watch. Upon release, the card received significant attention within the competitive community for its efficiency and ability to tax opponents, quickly becoming a staple in multiple eternal formats. Its design is widely cited by players as a successful example of balancing color-pie experimentation with high-level mechanical utility.
