Where it came from
Esper Sentinel was introduced in the 2021 expansion Modern Horizons 2 as part of the set's Timeshifted series, a collection of cards designed to provide high-utility options for eternal formats like Modern and Commander. The card was conceived as a white-aligned engine for card advantage, addressing a long-standing mechanical weakness in the color's identity by imposing a tax on opponent spellcasting.
The card’s distinct aesthetic features an illustration by Titus Lunter, who crafted a vigilant, armored automaton reflecting the artifice and structure of the Esper shard from the Alara plane. Upon its release, the card was immediately recognized by the player base for its efficiency and potential to scale in multiplayer environments, quickly establishing itself as a staple of competitive white-based strategies.
