Provenance

Where it came from

Whitemane Lion was originally introduced in the 2007 Planar Chaos set for Magic: The Gathering. Designed by the Wizards of the Coast team, the card was part of a color-shifted experiment where traditional mechanics were reimagined within different color philosophies, placing this white creature in a role that allows for the tactical reuse of other permanents.

The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic illustrators in the game's history. His depiction of the lion emphasizes a regal, feline aesthetic consistent with its white mana alignment. Its inclusion in The List, a recurring promotional subset, reflects its status as a reliable and enduring utility creature that remains popular in formats like Commander for its efficient ability to blink allies and protect them from removal.
