Where it came from
Eternal Witness was originally released in the 2004 set Champions of Kamigawa, designed as a green creature that could return any card from a player's graveyard to their hand. The design reflects the green color pie's emphasis on nature and cyclical life, and it quickly became a staple in various formats for its utility and consistency.
The 30th Anniversary Play Promo version, numbered 12, was created in 2023 to celebrate three decades of Magic: The Gathering. These promotional cards utilize the classic 'retro' frame aesthetic, a deliberate design choice intended to evoke nostalgia among long-term players and collectors by mimicking the card layout prevalent during the game's early years.
