Where it came from
Eternal Witness first appeared in the 2004 set Fifth Dawn, representing a pivotal moment in green creature design by introducing the ability to return any card from the graveyard to the hand. This specific version, featuring artwork by Kev Walker, was included as a core inclusion in the 2022 Starter Commander Decks to provide newer players with a functional, staple utility creature. Walker’s depiction of the shaman emphasizes the druidic, nature-focused aesthetic that has defined the card’s identity for nearly two decades.
The card is widely considered one of the most efficient utility creatures in Magic: The Gathering history. Its design goal was to provide green decks with a form of card advantage that rewarded recursive play. Upon its initial release, it was lauded for its flexibility and power level, eventually becoming a centerpiece in the Commander format. Its inclusion in the Starter Commander Decks ensured that players entering the format had access to a card that balanced technical utility with an iconic, classic visual style.
