Field of the Dead

Field of the Dead was originally released as part of the Core Set 2020 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, featuring artwork by Titus Lunter. The card was designed to evoke a sense of desolate, sprawling landscape, fitting the gothic and necromantic themes often associated with the game's broader lore. The promotional version, designated 247p, was distributed through the game's organized play channels as a special incentive for players, distinguishing it from the standard card stock found in booster packs.

The design of the card centers on its unique mechanical identity, which rewards players for controlling diverse land types, reflecting a strategic shift toward mid-range deck building during its period of relevance. Titus Lunter’s illustration captures a misty, melancholic atmosphere that resonates with the card's function of amassing an undead army. Upon its release, the card became a focal point of competitive discussion due to its high efficiency in specific deck archetypes, ultimately leading to significant changes in tournament play structures.
