Where it came from
The Final Fantasy Tokens were released as a promotional series in Japan during the late 1990s, capitalizing on the immense cultural success of the Final Fantasy franchise during the PlayStation era. These items were typically distributed as pack-ins with confectionery or food products, a common marketing strategy in the Japanese hobby market designed to encourage repeated purchases among fans of the series.
The design of token number 22 reflects the quintessential character-focused aesthetic of the franchise at the time, utilizing clean, vectorized illustrations that highlight iconic elements of the game's lore. Created as miniature collectible assets, they were intended to be portable tributes to the complex world-building of Square’s titles, serving both as nostalgic mementos for long-time players and accessible entry points for newer audiences during the period's rapid expansion of gaming merchandise.
