Where it came from
The Food token was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages Commander set. These tokens were designed to represent the Food artifact subtype introduced in the Throne of Eldraine expansion, which allows players to sacrifice the item for life gain. Within the context of Strixhaven, the token serves as a functional utility piece for decks utilizing green-aligned mechanics, appearing alongside the various thematic elements of the Silverquill, Prismari, Witherbloom, Lorehold, and Quandrix colleges.
The visual design of the token follows the established aesthetic of the Strixhaven supplemental products, focusing on a clean, academic look consistent with the magical university theme. Like many tokens produced for the Commander series, the art is commissioned to be both thematic and legible on the battlefield. It reflects the broader design philosophy of Wizards of the Coast to provide standardized, easily identifiable tokens that enhance the gameplay experience in social, multiplayer formats.
