Sol Ring

The Sol Ring was released in 1993 as part of Limited Edition Beta, the second printing of the original Magic: The Gathering base set. Designed by Richard Garfield as part of a cycle of artifacts providing mana acceleration, the card was intended to capture the high-fantasy aesthetic of the game's early developmental phase. Its inclusion in the set established it as one of the most mechanically powerful cards in the game's history, fundamentally altering competitive play by allowing players to accelerate their resource development early in a game.

The artwork for the Beta printing was created by Dan Frazier, whose distinctive style became synonymous with the game's early visual identity. Frazier’s illustration depicts a stylized, glowing ring centered against a minimalist backdrop, aiming for an ethereal, magical quality consistent with the game’s lore. While initial critical reception focused more on the card's balance than its artistic merit, it has since become a foundational piece of hobbyist history and one of the most sought-after artifacts in the secondary market.
