Where it came from
Force of Vigor was originally released in the 2019 set Modern Horizons, designed to inject powerful, nostalgic mechanics directly into the Modern format of Magic: The Gathering. The card was specifically crafted to provide a free, efficient answer to artifacts and enchantments, echoing the design philosophy of the cycle of free 'pitch' spells first seen in Alliances. By allowing players to exile a green card from their hand to cast it without paying its mana cost, it creates a high-tempo interaction that punishes opponents who rely heavily on permanent-based strategies.
The artwork for this particular iteration, featured in the Modern Horizons Timeshifts collection, draws upon the thematic aesthetic of the set’s specialized frame treatment. Illustrators working on this expansion focused on capturing the primal, overwhelming power of nature reclaiming artificial structures. The card was received by the competitive community as a landmark inclusion, becoming a mainstay in sideboards across various formats due to its versatility and ability to destroy two targets simultaneously for zero mana.
