Where it came from
The Strixhaven Art Series was released in 2021 as a special component within the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. These cards were designed to highlight the high-fantasy aesthetic of the game's newest plane, Arcavios, by showcasing the set's promotional illustrations in a larger, borderless format without the standard gameplay text. This particular double-sided card features the forest environment, a staple of the green mana color identity, meant to evoke the magical and academic atmosphere of the Witherbloom college.
The illustration was created by artist Titus Lunter, whose work is frequently featured in Wizards of the Coast products. Lunter focused on a lush, overgrown aesthetic to emphasize the natural, swamp-adjacent themes of the Witherbloom students who study the essence of living things. The art series cards were well-received by collectors and enthusiasts for their premium finish and the ability to appreciate the intricate details of the card art that are often obscured by text boxes in standard gameplay cards.
