Where it came from
The Forsaken Wastes card featured in the 1997 World Championship Decks was part of a specific product line released by Wizards of the Coast to commemorate the top decks from that year's Magic: The Gathering World Championship. These decks were pre-constructed, non-tournament-legal replicas of the actual decks played by the world's best players, designed to give fans a chance to experience the mechanics and strategies of elite competitive play.
The art and design for this card originated from the Mirage expansion, reflecting the set's desert-themed aesthetic. The World Championship versions are distinct due to their gold-bordered frames and the specific back design, which was intended to prevent them from being shuffled into standard decks. These decks are highly regarded by collectors today as a time capsule of the late 90s competitive meta, capturing a period when the game was rapidly expanding its professional circuit.
