Where it came from
Giant Growth was originally printed in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993 as a core green common. This specific version hails from the 1997 World Championship Decks, a series of boxed sets released by Wizards of the Coast to replicate the sixty-card decks used by the top players at that year's World Championship in Seattle. These cards are distinguished by a gold-bordered back and the player's signature stamped on the front, serving as a commemorative snapshot of competitive play from that era.
The card was designed by Richard Garfield, intended to provide green with an efficient, low-cost way to alter combat math. The illustration for the 1997 World Championship version utilizes the classic art by Jeff A. Menges, which depicts a primitive, visceral transformation. In the context of the 1997 tournament scene, Giant Growth remained a staple for its versatility, allowing players to save creatures from burn spells or push through decisive amounts of damage during high-stakes matches.
