Where it came from
The 1997 World Championship Decks were released by Wizards of the Coast as a way for players to experience the top-performing deck lists from the 1997 Magic: The Gathering World Championship. Unlike standard booster pack cards, these were printed with unique gold-bordered backs and signatures of the players on the front, making them explicitly marked as non-tournament legal and intended for collectors and casual play. They serve as a historical snapshot of the professional meta-game during a pivotal era in the card game's early growth.
The Mountain card included in this set features the classic artwork by artist Christopher Rush, first introduced in the Alpha expansion. The 1997 World Championship version preserves this iconic depiction of the landscape, rendered in the specific high-gloss, gold-stamped aesthetic characteristic of the commemorative deck series. This card represents a bridge between the foundational aesthetics of Magic's initial release and the competitive documentation efforts that defined the game's later organized play initiatives.
