Where it came from
The 1997 World Championship Decks were released by Wizards of the Coast as a way to allow players to experience the top-performing deck lists from the 1997 Magic: The Gathering World Championship held in Seattle. This specific Forest, bearing the gold-bordered back and the signature of the deck's pilot, was included in the commemorative set to replicate the exact construction used by the professional players during the tournament.
The design of the 1997 series utilized the standard art assets from the base sets of the era, primarily drawn from Mirage and Fifth Edition, but distinguished them from standard tournament-legal cards with gold borders and facsimile signatures. These decks were intended as a bridge for the public to interact with professional-level strategies, and the inclusion of basic lands like this Forest maintained the visual consistency of the competitive decks while ensuring the product remained distinct from non-collectible gaming components.
