Where it came from
The Fungus Beast token, numbered 17 in the Secrets of Strixhaven Commander set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021 to accompany the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion. In the game of Magic: The Gathering, tokens are auxiliary cards used to represent creatures created by spells or abilities. This specific iteration was designed to support the Witherbloom faction, a college within the Strixhaven university dedicated to life and death magic, which frequently utilizes token-generation mechanics.
The visual direction for the token reflects the biology of the Witherbloom aesthetic, blending organic flora with grotesque, swamp-dwelling features. Like many tokens in modern sets, the art was commissioned by Wizards of the Coast to be evocative and functional, ensuring players could easily differentiate the creature type on the board. While the artist for this specific token is part of a collective pool of illustrators commissioned for the set, the design adheres to the established style guide for the plane of Arcavios.
