Saproling

The Saproling token, cataloged as number 18 in the Secrets of Strixhaven Commander series, was released in 2021 as a supplemental component for the Magic: The Gathering Strixhaven: School of Mages Commander decks. These tokens were produced to provide physical representations for game mechanics that create Saproling creatures, which have been a staple of the game since the Invasion expansion in 2000. In the context of Strixhaven, these tokens were designed to integrate with the set's unique aesthetic, often featuring artwork that echoes the academic and magical themes of the plane.

The design of this specific token continues the Wizards of the Coast tradition of outsourcing illustration to a rotating roster of talented digital and traditional artists. These tokens are designed with a functional focus, ensuring that the token's card type and power-toughness values are easily identifiable during fast-paced tabletop play. While tokens are often considered peripheral to the main card sets, they have become highly collectible items that players prize for their thematic variations and the specific artistic flair each edition brings to the game's table.
