Where it came from
The Frog Lizard token was released in 2021 as part of the Commander set for the Magic: The Gathering expansion Strixhaven: School of Mages. Specifically, it was designed to support the 'Lorehold Legacies' deck, which centers on the mechanics of archaeology and bringing artifacts from the graveyard back into play. These tokens serve as physical manifestations of temporary creatures created by various cards during gameplay, ensuring players have a visual reference for their board state.
The artwork for this token was commissioned by Wizards of the Coast to fit the academic and magical aesthetic of the Strixhaven campus. Like many tokens in the modern era of the game, it was designed to be functional and clear, emphasizing the hybrid nature of the creature to distinguish it from standard Frog or Lizard tokens. It received a standard reception from players, valued primarily for its practical role in organized play and its cohesive integration into the artistic theme of the Lorehold college.
