Where it came from
The Germ token was released as part of the Commander 2015 accessory lineup for Magic: The Gathering. These tokens were designed to represent the ephemeral creatures created by the 'living weapon' mechanic, a feature introduced years prior in the Scars of Mirrodin block to represent equipment that physically manifests a creature upon entering the battlefield.
The card features artwork by Eric Deschamps, who captured the grotesque, biological aesthetic associated with the Phyrexian faction. The design emphasizes the parasitic nature of the Germ, visually reinforcing the lore that these creatures serve merely as hosts for the artifacts they carry, a theme that has remained consistent throughout their inclusion in various expansion sets and supplemental products.
