Where it came from
Gideon, Ally of Zendikar, released as part of the Battle for Zendikar set in 2015, represents a pivotal moment in the Magic: The Gathering storyline where the planeswalker Gideon Jura leads the defense of the plane of Zendikar against the encroaching Eldrazi titans. This specific version, identified as promo card 29s, was distributed through the game's organized play programs, often as a participation or placement prize for players engaging in regional tournaments during the set's release window.
The artwork for this card was rendered by artist Eric Deschamps, who sought to capture the character's tactical resolve and iconic invulnerability in the heat of battle. The design was praised by the competitive community for its versatility and power level, quickly becoming a staple in standard formats of the era. Its status as a prominent planeswalker card within the lore of the multiverse solidified its desirability among both functional players and those who appreciate the evolving narrative of the franchise.
