Where it came from
Gideon, Ally of Zendikar was originally released in the 2015 Magic: The Gathering expansion Battle for Zendikar. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, this planeswalker card was crafted to represent the heroic leader of the Zendikar resistance as he defended his home plane from the Eldrazi titans. Its design features an iconic illustration by Eric Deschamps, who captured the character’s stoic determination amidst the shifting landscape of his world.
Upon its introduction, the card became a cornerstone of competitive play, particularly within the Standard format, due to its versatile ability set and resiliency as a threats-generating permanent. Inclusion in 'The List'—a curated selection of reprints inserted into Set Boosters—reintroduces this influential card to newer generations of players, honoring its historical impact on the game's meta-development while maintaining the original artistic integrity of the 2015 print run.
