Where it came from
Gideon, Ally of Zendikar was released in 2015 as a key planeswalker card in the Battle for Zendikar set. The set was designed to explore the return to the plane of Zendikar following the catastrophic release of the Eldrazi titans, a narrative arc that deeply shaped the card's mechanical identity. The card was crafted to represent Gideon Jura's role as a tactical leader and frontline protector, designed by the Wizards of the Coast development team to be a versatile force on the battlefield.
The card was illustrated by Eric Deschamps, who captured Gideon in a dynamic, heroic stance consistent with the character's established aesthetic. Upon its release, it was highly regarded by players for its efficiency and power level, eventually becoming a staple in competitive Standard and Modern formats. Its impact on the game's competitive landscape remains a notable chapter in the history of the Modern Magic era.
