Where it came from
Gix's Command was released in the 2022 Magic: The Gathering set The Brothers' War, which explores the foundational conflict between brothers Urza and Mishra. This card represents a powerful artifact of the Phyrexians, the biomechanical antagonists central to the set's narrative arc. It is designed as a modal spell, offering players multiple tactical choices that reflect the manipulative and ruthless nature of Gix, a major lieutenant in the Phyrexian hierarchy.
The card was illustrated by Donato Giancola, a highly regarded fantasy artist known for his sophisticated mastery of light and form. Giancola chose to depict Gix in a manner that emphasizes his horrific, metallic fusion with flesh, consistent with the broader aesthetic of the Phyrexian faction as they appeared in this historical flashback set. Upon its release, the card was noted by players for its high utility and thematic cohesion with the set's graveyard-recursion mechanics.
