Where it came from
Gix's Command is a prominent sorcery card released in the Magic: The Gathering set The Brothers' War in late 2022, specifically appearing as part of the promotional set of alternate-art cards. The card represents a pivotal character in the game's lore, Gix, the Yawgmoth Praetor, who served as a primary antagonist and a central figure in the corruption of the plane of Phyrexia. The mechanics of the card are designed to reflect Gix's manipulative and opportunistic nature, allowing players to choose two of four powerful effects that mirror the character's penchant for sacrifice and control.
The illustrative design for this promo version was crafted to emphasize the dark, biomechanical aesthetic synonymous with the Phyrexians. By utilizing the distinct visual language of The Brothers' War, which revisited the foundational conflict between Urza and Mishra, the artwork reinforces the heavy, industrial, and horrific elements of the setting. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander and Eternal format communities, largely due to its versatility and its thematic resonance with fans of the game's deep historical narrative.
