Where it came from
Gix's Caress was released in 2022 as part of The Brothers' War, a Magic: The Gathering expansion that revisited the foundational lore of the franchise. The card depicts a moment involving Gix, the high-ranking Phyrexian praetor and primary antagonist during the war between Urza and Mishra. It was designed as an enchantment reflecting the mechanical, biomechanical, and corruptive influence of Phyrexia upon the plane of Dominaria, mechanically serving as a card-draw engine that demands a sacrifice from the player.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who utilized a dark, visceral aesthetic to capture the essence of Phyrexian experimentation. By focusing on the interplay between biological frailty and technological advancement, the visual direction aimed to immerse players in the grim atmosphere of the war. Upon its release, the card was noted by the community for its thematic resonance with Phyrexian lore, though it saw varied playability across different competitive formats.
