Where it came from
Fauna Shaman was originally introduced in the 2010 set Magic 2011, designed as a creature-focused utility card that echoed the functionality of the classic Survival of the Fittest. The card allows players to trade creatures in hand for more specific threats from their library, bridging the gap between early-game setup and late-game finishers. Its mechanics solidified its place as a staple for green-aligned decks that rely on graveyard synergy and creature tutoring.
The version from The Brothers' War Promos, numbered 179s, features updated, modern card frames and art treatments characteristic of the set's promotional releases. The Brothers' War expansion centered on the iconic conflict between Urza and Mishra, and these promos were designed to showcase a blend of nostalgic gameplay elements with the polished aesthetic of contemporary Magic: The Gathering card design. This specific variant is often sought after by players who appreciate the clean, refined look of the retro-framed or showcase-style treatments introduced during this era.
