Guerrilla Tactics

Guerrilla Tactics was released in 1996 as part of the Alliances expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, Alliances followed the narrative of the Ice Age block and introduced mechanics centered around card advantage and resource management. The card was designed to function as a red instant that provided a damage boost if the opponent forced the player to discard it, serving as a tactical punishment against hand-disruption strategies prevalent in the competitive meta at the time.

The artwork for this particular iteration was illustrated by Anson Maddocks, a foundational artist for the early years of the game. Maddocks was known for his distinctively gritty, organic style that defined the aesthetic of the early sets. In this piece, he depicted a chaotic, dark scene meant to evoke the desperate and unconventional nature of the eponymous combat strategy, fitting the thematic leanings of the red color alignment which emphasizes impulse, fire, and direct aggression.
