Guerrilla Tactics

Guerrilla Tactics was released in 2001 as part of the Deckmasters: Garfield vs. Finkel box set, a unique collaborative release that pitted Wizards of the Coast co-founder Richard Garfield against professional player Jon Finkel. The set was designed to capture the competitive essence of their respective playstyles, featuring curated decks that showcased iconic card mechanics from Magic: The Gathering history. This specific card was reprinted with distinctive black borders and a unique collector numbering system to distinguish it from its original appearances in the Mercadian Masques set.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Christopher Rush, who was a foundational figure in the visual development of the game. His design for Guerrilla Tactics aimed to convey the chaotic, opportunistic nature of the spell through vivid, action-oriented imagery. Upon its release in the Deckmasters collection, the card was well-received by collectors who valued the set for its historical significance and the inclusion of cards that had previously defined high-level tournament play, cementing its role as a functional artifact of the game's competitive evolution.
