Horror

The Horror token, bearing collector number 8, was released in 2021 as part of the ancillary set accompanying the Commander 2021 expansion for the trading card game Magic: The Gathering. These tokens were produced to provide physical representations for game mechanics that create specific creature types, allowing players to track board states during gameplay. The set features a unified aesthetic direction that emphasizes the thematic focus of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion, which served as the primary narrative backdrop for the Commander 2021 releases.

The design of the token reflects the collaborative visual language established by Wizards of the Coast's internal art department for the Strixhaven release. While individual tokens in these sets are often created by various contracted illustrators to fit a specific prompt, they are designed to maintain visual cohesion with the overarching 'Magical Academy' theme of the set. The token was received by the player base as a utilitarian collectible, prized for its ability to enhance the visual clarity of games involving the Witherbloom, Prismari, Quandrix, Lorehold, and Silverquill factions.
