Provenance

Where it came from

The Whale token was released in 2021 as part of the Commander 2021 expansion for the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering. These tokens were produced to accompany the 'Prismari Performance' preconstructed deck, specifically created to represent the creature tokens generated by the card Gyruda, Doom of Depths or similar effects that may enter the battlefield throughout the gameplay experience.

The illustration for this token was provided by artist Nils Hamm. Known for his evocative and painterly style, Hamm utilized a muted color palette to depict the whale in a fluid, dreamlike state, emphasizing the majestic and otherworldly nature of the creature within the game's expansive fantasy setting. The token was well-received by players for its atmospheric aesthetic, which stands out among the more functional designs often found in mass-produced token sets.
