Where it came from
Birds of Paradise was released in 1993 as part of Limited Edition Alpha, the foundational set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game created by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast. As one of the original rare cards in the game, it was designed to provide players with an efficient means of generating mana diversity, a crucial mechanic that allowed for more complex deck construction in the game's nascent stage.
The card’s iconic illustration was rendered by artist Christopher Rush, who contributed significantly to the visual identity of the game’s early years. Rush utilized a vibrant, painterly style that became synonymous with the aesthetic of classic Magic cards, focusing on the ethereal qualities of the avian subject. The card has remained a staple of the game for decades, widely respected for its strategic utility and its role as a centerpiece of collectible gaming history.
