Swamp

The Swamp card from the Magic: The Gathering Fourth Edition base set was released in 1995 as part of a foundational effort to reprint essential gameplay elements for a rapidly expanding player base. As a basic land, it serves as the mechanical engine of the game, providing the black mana necessary to cast spells. Its inclusion in this specific set was a transition point for the game, marking the final time that cards from the original Alpha, Beta, and Unlimited printings were consolidated for broader distribution.

The artwork for this specific Swamp—depicting a stark, desolate landscape with a lone, twisted tree—was illustrated by Dameon Willich. Willich’s contribution to the early visual language of the game leaned into a gritty, atmospheric aesthetic that emphasized the eerie nature of black-aligned cards. Upon release, the Fourth Edition lands were well-received for their accessibility and consistent white-bordered design, which solidified their place in the standard playing experience of the mid-1990s.
