Lore

Why it matters

As a common token from the Ravnica Allegiance set, this card serves as a functional representation of magical constructs summoned during gameplay. While its common rarity makes it widely accessible, its role in battle provides a necessary physical presence for the specific effects that bring these illusions to life on the table.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Illusion token was released in 2019 as part of the Ravnica Allegiance set for Magic: The Gathering. These tokens serve as auxiliary game pieces used to represent temporary creatures created by specific card effects during gameplay, ensuring players have a clear visual marker on the board. The design was produced by Wizards of the Coast to fit the aesthetic of the Ravnica plane, which is characterized by sprawling gothic architecture and complex political guilds.

The artwork for this specific token was created by Greg Staples. Known for his atmospheric and detailed digital style, Staples utilized a ethereal, ghostly color palette to convey the transient nature of the creature type. The illustration emphasizes the shimmering, incorporeal qualities associated with illusion magic within the game's lore, and the piece was well-received by players for its cohesion with the set's overall thematic focus on the Azorius Senate and Simic Combine.
