Provenance

Where it came from

The Illusion token, numbered 4 within the Modern Masters set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2013. It was designed to support the set's draft environment, which revisited powerful cards from throughout Magic: The Gathering's history. Tokens in this release were intentionally stylized to provide a clear, standardized visual indicator for players utilizing effects that created creature copies or temporary manifestations on the battlefield.

The artwork for this token reflects the shift toward cohesive, high-fantasy aesthetics that characterized the era of Modern Masters. By featuring a clean, ethereal design, the illustration aimed to minimize gameplay confusion while maintaining the thematic mystery associated with illusion-based spells. It remains a functional piece of cardboard history, valued by players for its utility in completing sets and facilitating smooth gameplay during constructed and limited formats.
