Where it came from
Imperial Recruiter was originally printed in the 1999 set Portal Three Kingdoms, designed as a teaching set for the Asian market with simplified mechanics to reflect historical Chinese narratives. The card remained obscure and highly expensive in the secondary market for years due to its limited availability and unique ability to search for low-power creatures, becoming a staple in Commander formats.
This specific iteration, numbered 2244, was released as part of the Secret Lair series, a collection of limited-run, artist-focused card treatments. The visual direction for this drop utilized a distinct, modern art style intended to revitalize the classic design, moving away from traditional fantasy aesthetics to provide a unique collector's piece for established Magic: The Gathering players.
