Imperial Recruiter

Imperial Recruiter was originally printed as a rare card in the 1999 Portal Three Kingdoms set, designed to bridge the gap between the complex rules of Magic: The Gathering and the accessible mechanics favored by the Portal-era entry-level products. The set focused on the historical and legendary themes of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, with Imperial Recruiter serving as a mechanical staple that allowed players to search their libraries for low-power utility creatures, a powerful effect that would eventually cement its status as a foundational card in various competitive formats.

For the Masters 25 set released in 2018, Wizards of the Coast reissued the card with updated, modern frame aesthetics to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the game. The original illustration by Pete Venters was retained to honor the card's history, maintaining its iconic visual identity. Upon its re-release in Masters 25, the card was received warmly by the player base, as the reprint significantly increased accessibility to a previously difficult-to-acquire card that had become essential for high-level play in Eternal formats.
