Where it came from
The Imperial Recruiter was originally printed in the 1999 set Portal Three Kingdoms, a set designed to introduce new players to Magic: The Gathering through simplified mechanics and an aesthetic rooted in Chinese history. Because Portal Three Kingdoms had a limited distribution, the card remained relatively obscure and difficult to acquire for years, leading to significant interest from players in competitive eternal formats where its ability to tutor for low-power creatures became highly sought after.
The 2013 Judge Gift Card version was released as an exclusive reward for members of the Magic Judge Program. Illustrated by Volkan Baga, this rendition replaced the original art with a more detailed, painterly style that emphasizes the character's authoritative presence. This release was welcomed by collectors and competitive players alike, as it provided a more accessible and visually updated version of a card that had long been a staple of tournament play.
