Innocuous Insect

Innocuous Insect was released as part of the Mystery Booster: Convention Edition playtest cards in 2021. These cards were designed to mimic the aesthetic of early Magic: The Gathering playtest materials, featuring placeholder art, minimalist white borders, and experimental mechanics that had not yet undergone standard balancing or rigorous design refinement. They were intended to provide a whimsical, 'insider' experience for event participants, showcasing the chaotic and creative brainstorming phases of game development.

The card was designed by the Wizards of the Coast internal R&D team, maintaining the intentional 'low-fi' look of internal design documents. Like others in the series, the visual style emphasizes the functional nature of the playtest environment, prioritizing raw mechanical exploration over the polished, thematic illustration seen in mainline sets. The card was received by the community as a collectible curiosity, valued primarily for its status as a tangible piece of the game's iterative design history.
