Where it came from
The Everlasting Lich was released in 2021 as part of the Mystery Booster: Convention Edition playtest cards. These cards were designed by the Wizards of the Coast research and development team as internal experiments, intended to test unconventional mechanics and design spaces that would not typically appear in standard set releases. The inclusion of these cards in public packs was a unique event, allowing players to experience the chaotic, iterative process of game design firsthand.
Designed with a focus on recursive graveyard gameplay, the card features the distinct, minimalist aesthetic associated with early-stage prototype cards. The text is intentionally experimental, reflecting a design philosophy that prioritizes mechanical exploration over the rigid templating found in commercial Magic: The Gathering products. Upon their release, these cards were received with significant intrigue by the player community, who valued them both as curiosities and as windows into the iterative development cycle of the game.
