Where it came from
The Star Trek Commander Tokens were introduced as a specialized accessory line for enthusiasts of the Star Trek Customizable Card Game, a product published by Decipher, Inc. throughout the 1990s. These tokens were produced to provide players with physical markers for tracking game states, such as the specific attributes of commanders in play, rather than relying on paper notes or generic counters.
The 'Insect' token, numbered 5 in the series, reflects the distinct graphic design aesthetic of the Decipher era, which often integrated high-contrast imagery and iconography directly pulled from the television show's visual assets. The design aimed for clarity and immersion, ensuring that the token felt like a cohesive part of the game's broader Star Trek universe, and it was primarily received as a functional necessity for competitive tournament play.
