Where it came from
The Insect token from the Commander 2020 set was released in April 2020 as part of the ancillary product line designed to support the Commander format. These tokens are essential gameplay accessories for decks utilizing cards that create creature tokens, specifically those featuring the mutate or swarm mechanics prevalent in the set's preconstructed decks. The design process for these tokens prioritizes visual clarity, ensuring that players can easily identify the creature's type and power-toughness stats during the fast-paced flow of a Commander game.
The artwork for this specific token adheres to the high-fantasy aesthetic established by Wizards of the Coast for the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths release, which serves as the thematic backdrop for these cards. The illustration is designed to fit the creature type's identity while maintaining a consistent visual language with the primary card set. Upon release, these tokens were well-received by the player base for their utility and the high production quality that distinguishes modern Magic: The Gathering card accessories from earlier, less standardized versions.
