Island Sanctuary

Island Sanctuary was originally released as a rare card in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, later appearing in the Fifth Edition core set in 1997. Designed by Richard Garfield, the card was conceived as a defensive tool for blue decks, offering a unique stall mechanic that prevents combat damage in exchange for skipping the player's draw step. Its inclusion in Fifth Edition marked its continued relevance in the early era of the game, providing players with a thematic way to create a secure, untouchable board state.

The artwork for the card was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a renowned artist whose distinct, flowing style defined much of the early visual identity of the game. Hoover’s illustration of an ethereal, isolated island sanctuary captures the serene and protective nature of the card's effect. Upon its release and subsequent reprints, it was well-received by players focusing on control-oriented strategies, and it remains a nostalgic touchstone for collectors interested in the aesthetic history of early Magic: The Gathering card art.
