Where it came from
Island Sanctuary was originally released in the 1993 Limited Edition Alpha set for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Richard Garfield. As part of the game's earliest white-mana card pool, it was crafted to provide defensive utility, allowing players to skip their draw step in exchange for immunity from attacks, provided they controlled an island. This mechanic reflected the early design philosophy of creating highly situational, flavor-heavy enchantments that could swing the tempo of a game.
The artwork for the card was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a foundational artist for the game whose style was known for its distinct, ethereal lines and vibrant, often dreamlike compositions. The illustration captures a serene, protected maritime environment that aligns with the card's defensive purpose. The card was carried over into the Unlimited Edition, which served as the first core set reprint to address the rapid, unanticipated demand for the game following its initial launch.
